Circuit Work
8th Graders,
We are going to be building simple circuits in class today. Get in your groups and be ready to work!
Here is the group handout that you must fill out.

Circuitry Basics
Build a simple circuit that includes wire, a 6V battery, a switch, and one light. Explain how the position of the switch effects the light.- When the switch is open the light doesn’t turn on because it is an open circuit. When it is closed the light does turn on because it is a closed circuit.
Build a circuit that contains wire, a 6V battery, and two lights (switch is optional). Draw a picture of the circuit.
How does adding a second bulb effect the brightness of the lights. Why do you think this occurs? Answer using the words voltage, current, and resistance.- They dim because each light has to share the voltage from the battery. This creates resistance which slows down the current.
Gather six substances from around the room. Test to see if they are good conductors of electricity.- We are using: a metal ring, a comb,a stamp, a teddy bear, a tissue and purrell.
Tissue-insulator
Ring- Conductor
Stamp-Insulator
Comb- Insulator
Teddy Bear- Insulator
germX- Insulator
What patterns do you see related to if a substance is a good conductor?- The plastic and liquid substances were insulators and the metal substances were conductors.
Can a liquid be a good conductor of electricity?- No it is an insulator.
Try hooking up a circuit with 1 C battery, wire, and once light. Now hook up another C cell battery in series with the other. Write your observations.- With one battery the light is not very bright but with two batteries the light gets brighter.

Mr K,
On one set of notes I have…
Current- the flow of electrons
Resistance- the force that oposes the current
On Another set of notes I have…
current- The rate a substance alows electrons to flow
resistance- The amount of the substance that resists the flow of elctrons
Which should I use?
