Microbiology – Cells

Posted in 7th Grade at 9:00 am by slesscience

7th Graders,

We will be looking at plant and animal cells during the lab block this week. our plant cells will be the membrane of an onion.  Our animal cells will be a scraping from our cheek.

We will be using the virtual microscope to practice before conducting the actual experiment.

The animal cells are more spread out, and the plant cells are more concentrated. The cheek cells were all over the place, and the onion root cells were in pretty much one place.

    Mr. K
I noticed that the onion cell had lots of layers and the bacteria cell you could not really see any layers. The letter e was a letter e, and the cheek swab was too blurry to see anything.

    thanks,
    natalie :)

I noticed that plant cells had more straight edges than the animal cells. Meaning that
animal cells were more circular and plant cells were more rectangular.

We noticed that the animal cell was more spread out, while the plant cell is compact and circular.

    Mr K,

The Animal cells were more easier to see all of the organells than the plants.

    Hey Mr. Kremer.

Overall, the virtual microscope was fun. I thought it was hard to get the circle just right when adjusting the ocular lenses. I also noticed when going to a higher magnification, the cells were more visible on the cheek smear.

The mircroscope was hard to use because whenever we changed the starting position we had to redo the course and fine focusing knobs each time. We also had trouble deciding which parts did which jobs.

when you looked at the animal cell (onion) the cells look like small boxes and the cheek swab was more spread out and smudged

I noticed using the microscope that the letter “e” was a clear, the check swab was a little blurry, and the onion cell had many layers and was very big.

    hey mr. kremer,

the letter e had no cells because obviously its not alive. the onion root tip’s cells were rectangular so it was a plant. they were close together and there was no space in between them. the bacterial capsule had circular cells and so did the cheek smear and their cells were more spread out.

The cheek cells were more like purple blobs. The plant cells were smaller and like little dots. The plant cells werwe also more connected than the cheek cells.

Anjali and Hope liked the cheek cells best because you could clearly see the nucleus and that it had the best resolution, and that it was blue.

Some cells where separated, and some were clustered together. The animal cells were circular, while the plant cells were rectangles. Letter ‘e’ was interesting because when you got closer, the letter got darker. Plus, when close up on the ‘e’, you can see uneven edges.

We found out that the onion cells had little black dots in them. The bacteria had little white things that looked like seeds, and the cheek smear had little clots of liquid which was probably just water.

    hey
-i didnt see the point of letter e.
-the onio root was really close together and obviously its aplant
-the cheek cells weren’t as organized as the onion ones were
-the bacterial cells were very circular

I know this message has nothing to do with the post, but I was wondering if I’m missing out on anything… WAIT!! Nevermind! You guys are talking about the “stuff”. So, I’ll leave you to that. If there is anything else, email.
    Cheers
