8th Grade Parent Letter

Posted in 8th Grade at 12:31 pm by slesscience

8th Grade Parents,

The year is coming to end, and your children are transitioning to high school life.  At St. Luke’s we strive to send all of our students to high school ready for all of the challenges they will face.  Some of those demands are academic in nature while others or social and emotional.  One extremely important challenge that many high school students are confronted with is the peer pressure to engage in risk-taking behavior.  We feel it is extremely important to prepare our students for post St. Luke’s life by educating them about their bodies.  It is vital that all students leaving St. Luke’s have an age-appropriate understanding of their bodies and the risks of sexual activity.

On Wednesday, May 20th, the eighth grade students will be meeting in small groups to discuss sexual anatomy, personal hygiene, sexual outcomes, and Sexually Transmitted Infections.  The 8th grade girls will meet with Dr. Catherine Spezia and Cindy Cabello in the youth room.  The 8th grade boys will boys will meet with Dr. Michael Lindner and Chuck Kremer in the science classroom. We believe that the most important message for our students to hear while leaving St. Luke’s is that their bodies are a gift from God that should be respected and that abstinence is the only way to completely protect your body.

As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns.

-Mr. K and Mrs. Cabello

UPDATE!!!

I have added all of my photos to the photobucket now. We have about 400 pictures up already.  If you want me to added your photos at school, bring them on a flash drive.  Feel free to comment on them or download them.  What a great Trip!

I am low on pictures of Dr. B and David so please send me any good ones you have.

8th Grade Parents,

I created a photobucket album of some DC pics so that you can see what is going on while it happens.  I am not the most diligent picture taker so they may be slow coming.  Tomorrow I will also try to upload some of the pics that the students take, but we didn’t make it in to the hotel until 10 p.m. so I am too tired to hunt down cameras.

7th Graders,

For the rest of the week, you will be studying Charles Darwin and The Theory of Natural Selection.

  • Watch the video “Elements of Science – Biological Evolution” as a class.
  • Post a reaction to two of the discussion questions to the comment section of the blog.  All posts should be unique and well though out.  Feel free to use your textbook and my links to answer the discussion questions. (All comments should be at least 4 sentences and should contains new ideas that no one else has posted).
  • Complete the Charles Darwin Webquest turn in your data log sheet and quetions to Cinderella.

Discussion Questions

  1. How do you think natural selection and evolution relate to disease spread (like swine flu)?
  2. Does evolution ever occur so quickly that it can be easily observed in one species?
  3. What are some of the struggles of using fossil records to support the theory of evolution?   Does this effect how you feel about the theory?
  4. Geologists think that the earth is roughly 5.6 billion years old.  How do you think they arrived at this number?
  5. Scientists believe that early life first formed in conditions similar to deep ocean hydrothermal vents.  Why would life be different there then in our ecosystem?
